Whie working with an existing site on 2nd and Colorado St. in Downtown Austin, we responded to the challenges of the site to create a furniture showroom for Vitra. While not losing sight of the company's strong image and brand voice, we incorporated programs in addition to showrooms such as an artist studio, manager office, storage, restroom, and sales desk. Developing a design system that complimented the existing site conditions, highlighted the Vitra brand, established strong circulation, met the program requirements, and promoted furniture display was essential.
This design concept pushes the boundaries on defining spaces through limited planes. Using these planes to created cubic volumes allows for clear separation of program, as well as smooth circulation between various showrooms and spaces. Dividing the volume in this way allows for a hierarchy of space, and provides the opportunity for multiple furniture display options. The varying opacities of the planes, coupled with suspended display boxes, establishes a sense of intrigue throughout the building that carries visitors from one zone to another. These suspended displays also take more advantage of the vertical height within the structure.
