This project proposes a new community center in Jonestown, Texas, a car-centric area of Travis County with picturesque Hill Country views. This creates a recognizable landmark building for the town and houses a library, administrative offices, a dance hall, and a small hotel. The organization of the building responds to the road's importance by positioning important public spaces, specifically the marketplace and dance hall, within view of the highway to attract vistors, while positioning office and hotel spaces further from the road maximizing views of the dramatic landscape. The buildings, organized as two entities descending the steep landscape, create a much-needed amenity in Jonestown: safe public space. This intermediate pedestrian corridor provides opportunities for public markets and community events at the dance hall for Jonestown residents. While responsive to the role of automobiles in this locale, this community center creates new opportunities for increased public interaction and pedestrian experiences of the topography of this scenic Texas town.
