Portfolio Reviews are a catalog requirement for undergraduate architecture students.

The Portfolio Review process is administered by the Program Director for Architecture, in collaboration with the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, and with the participation of a cross-section of other undergraduate faculty studio instructors designated by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

FALL

THIRD-YEAR PORTFOLIO REVIEW PROCESS

Portfolio Review Date
The Fall Portfolio Reviews will be scheduled in December.

Portfolio Review Panel
The Fall Portfolio Review panel will consist of two to three faculty reviewers.

Portfolio Review Form
See the Fall Portfolio Review Form for a list of competencies the reviewers will expect to see in the academic portfolio and pin-up.

Academic Portfolio
Students will bring their academic portfolio to the Portfolio Review.

Portfolio Review Pin-Up
In designated spaces, students will pin up:

  • A representative selection of their work from the current Design V Intermediate Studio. It will be similar to the previous week’s final review pin-up.

  • Include the entirety of the current semester process, not just the final product.

Studio instructors will provide additional pin-up details.

Portfolio Review Day | Faculty Process
A team of faculty reviewers (all third-year studio instructors and a selection of studio faculty) will do a two-hour walk-through to discuss the pinned-up work.

Their aim is to get a sense of standard achievement levels from the semester, to identify students that might need improvement, and to reduce variability in outcomes communicated in the individual feedback sessions later in the day.

Portfolio Review Day | Student Process
Students will be assigned an individual feedback session time by the studio instructor.

The student will be available to answer questions for up to five minutes, then will exit the room.

After the student exits the room, the panel will review the academic portfolio and discuss the pinned-up work.

The student will return to the room to receive feedback from the review panel.

Portfolio Review Outcomes
The panel will assign a rating for each competency on the Portfolio Review Form: On Track or Needs Improvement.

The student will receive a copy for their records. The Undergraduate Office will keep the original completed form. The outcome is distinct from the semester studio grade.

The Fall Portfolio Review outcome will not prevent a student from advancing to Design VI Intermediate Studio in the spring semester. The Portfolio Review intends to provide a benchmark for students as they progress in the studio sequence.

Spring

THIRD-YEAR PORTFOLIO REVIEW PROCESS

Studio instructors will receive a list of the students in their studio who are scheduled for a portfolio review shortly after the studio lottery, with a copy of any previous review forms. This is to allow students and their instructors to address whatever shortcomings–and capitalize on whatever strengths–were noted at the Portfolio Review.

Portfolio Review Date
The Spring Portfolio Reviews will take place in the week after Final Reviews

The faculty panels will meet with students during their individual feedback times and make their outcome recommendations.

All faculty reviewers will reconvene for an hour at the end of the day for a final walkthrough and to confirm all outcome decisions.

Portfolio Review Outcomes
The panel will assign a rating for each competency: Exceeds Expectations, Meets Expectations, or Does Not Meet Expectations.

The panel will also recommend one of three outcomes: Advance, Advance with Dean’s Design Distinction, or Take a Fifth Intermediate Studio and Re-Review.

Panel decisions will be reviewed and confirmed at the end of the Portfolio Review day by the Program Director for Architecture following a second walkthrough with all reviewers.

The student will receive a copy of their Portfolio Review Form for their records. The Undergraduate Office will keep the original completed form.

The Portfolio Review outcome is distinct from the semester studio grade. Portfolio Reviews are not designed to look at the student’s work the same way individual studio instructors do for a grade. Instead, the Portfolio Review process considers a student’s body of work as a whole, and its main concern is advising for individual success. The Portfolio Review is intended to evaluate the student’s longer-term trajectory while identifying their evident talents.
