With the establishment of the Dell Medical School and the redevelopment of the Central Health Brackenridge Campus, the Northeast quadrant of downtown Austin is poised for great change. An Austin Innovation Zone, first proposed in 2013 by former Mayor Lee Leffingwell, could be located adjacent to the Medical School and Central Health Campus. The Austin Innovation Zone will need to respond to the vision laid out by the Imagine Austin Comprehensive Plan. Studying existing innovation districts is an important part of the process of establishing an innovation district in Austin. However, creating a district that responds to the unique needs of Austin’s residents will require imaginative partnerships and creative planning.
